Milecastles, which appear about every mile, were home to close to 35 Roman soldiers during the building of the wall (120 A.D. or so). Gates allowed farmers to bring their sheep through to the other side. Some people say these milecastles were also a chance for the Romans to tax the people. { 1/400 sec, f10.0}
